Kwale is a small coastal town of Kenya. There are not many tourist spots in Kwale. The Shimba Hills National Reserve and the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (MES) are the major ones among the few tourist spots in Kwale. The Shimba Hills National Reserve is actually wildlife sanctuary of Kenya. The road to the Shimba Hills National Reserve is scattered with signs of the existence of elephants in the region. Kwale is located in the Coastal Province of Kenya. The reserve is an important region for the growth and conservation of different types of plants. The reserve is supposed to house approximately 700 elephants. This population is quite unmanageable as it endangers vegetation as well as the majority of the plant life. The conflict between other animals and the elephants sometimes reach dangerous levels. The Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (MES) has been set up on the north of this reserve. This sanctuary has reduced thew pressure of the elephants from the park. The park has been properly fenced to avoid the animals from getting inside the area meant for farming. The Kenya Wildlife Service helps both this reserve as well as the sanctuary.
Shimba Hills is famous for being home to Kenya's only herd of Sable Antelope. They are just 100 in number. The Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (MES) is located in the coastal province of Kenya, in Kwale, 45 km on the southwestern part of Mombasa. As of 1990, a cooperative was formed among the Mwaluganje community, United States Agency for International Development, the Born Free Foundation and the Eden Wildlife Trust, to establish the MES.
