The Lamu Islands is one of the oldest towns of Kenya and it has been able to retain all the magic and mystery of centuries gone by. Donkeys form the important means of transport in the region as there is no other way of transport in that region. The picture of life in Lamu is a happy and content one with the children playing in the narrow alleys, the men gather to chat in small groups while the women are busy finishing their household work. The most interesting thing to note while traveling in Lamu is the houses that have a balcony like terrace, where the members of the family like to spend time lying back, during the evenings or the late afternoons.

The island is known far and wide for it’s delicately carved wood doors as well as the variety of pulses available there. Traveling in Lamu would be incomplete without getting to know the local life of the people.
At first the Portuguese ruled over it and later it was the Kingdom of Zanzibar that ruled over the Lamu Islands. Finally, Kenya became independent in 1963. The economy of Lamu remained completely dependent on revenues from slave labor till the turn of the 19th century. The abolition of slavery caused a major setback to its economy. However, later it emerged as a big tourist attraction and even earned a lot of revenue from tourism. Tourism has grown to occupy a wonderful place in Lamu since the 1960s. There are all the necessary things needed to make your stay comfortable at Lamu.
