Lodwar is located in the West of lake Turkana, which is the greatest attraction of North Western Kenya and also the main factor for attracting tourists for traveling in Lodwar. Located on the A1 Road, Lodwar is also the largest town in this part of Kenya and also the capital of Turkana district. Apart from lake Turkana, you would also enjoy the view of Loima Hills that lie in the West of the town. Lake Turkana, which is also popular as Jade Sea offers extraordinary scenic beauty, for the wonderful landscape of the dead volcanoes. Watching the algae particles under the lake quickly changing color from blue to grey is also a wonderful experience. Lake Turkana is the biggest desert lake lake in the world and the most beautiful among the Rift Valley lakes.
Lake Turkana is fed by the water of Omo river of Ethiopia. Apart from scenic beauty of the lake other things that you would surely enjoy while traveling in Lodwar is the Jurassic look of Lake Turcana and also the movement of animals. At present lake Turcana is the home to 40 various species of fish, 22,000 crocodiles and large number of hippos. You would also get to see several kind of water birds.
In the recent time two islands named Southern Island and central Island have been declared national parks for protect the breeding grounds of birds and animals. Snakes, Gravy's zebras, giraffes and camels are also seen on the barren landscapes which is situated on the bank of Lake Turkana.
